  • This project involved a more resolute specification for the supply of our Splice Detector™ Technology. In this particular application RKB was tasked to design a fully instinctive and cohesive control package to be installed on a sheeter called an Accura Model SD165.

    The sheeter was not originally supplied without any splice detection. Furthermore, the sheeter came with a reject gate control that was manually operated and did not facilitate automatic control to reject any defective sheet of paper unless there was operational intervention which was just not reliable. The end user of the sheeter system wanted RKB to automate the complete quality assurance and control package such that it did not require operational intervention at all, especially upon deckle (web width) changes. Therefore RKB was tasked to supply all of the following sub-systems:

    1) the RKB Model 1088 Sentinel® Splice Detector™ Technology.
    2) the RKB Model 1122 Abolisher® Reject Gate Control™ Technology.
    3) the RKB Model 4000 AutoTrack® Technology.
    4) Controls, Speed Encoders, and web break sensors.

    After taking all required measurements of the sheeter, RKB determined where the splice detector needed to be placed relative to the cutter knife and reject gates for reliable sheet rejection. Upon reviewing the installation area, RKB was required to modify the paper web path such that the distance of the detection point (Splice Detector) to the cutter knife would be sufficient to provide reliable reject of each defective sheet upon detection of a splice. Once RKB determined the required geometric conditions, we designed a turn-key package that would ensure consistent, reliable and accurate detection of each and every splice (mill splice, butt splice, overlap splice, etc.) and its subsequent rejection by use of the existing reject gate located shortly after the cutter knife. Since the process included many different product types and web widths, the customer requested RKB automate the installation such that the splice detection system (Model 1088 Sentinel® Splice Detector™ Technology) would automatically track the web edge and adjust accordingly to ensure the unit was in operational mode while material was being processed. This system called our Model 4000 AutoTrack® Technology incorporated material edge tacking sensors modified to the splice detector and installed on a rodless cylinder secured on robust framework to ensure smooth operation. RKB installed a web break sensor which, upon a web break or loss of paper, would automatically re-tract the splice detector off line to allow unrestricted rethreading of the sheeter. The system was also designed with manual override to bring the unit offline for other events such as a jam by the stacker if required. Once the web is present, the Model 1088 Sentinel® Splice Detector™ would initiate and move back into operational position. The edge tracking ensures the Splice Detector™ consistently monitors the edge and adjusts to the correct position to compensate for any web wonder. The tracking guides are designed to ensure the splice detector glides onto the web into position. The rodless cylinder is operated by low pressure air that is commonly available in all mill environments.

    To ensure the defective paper was rejected correctly, RKB installed and interfaced its own Model 1122 Abolisher® Reject Gate Control™ Technology to control the sheeter reject gates. Additional to the supply of this reject gate control computer, we installed speed encoders to track the cutter knife revolutions to ensure the total system was in sync. Once the system was fully installed and up and running, RKB conducted 5 full days of tests along with training, to ensure mill personnel that they were indeed getting reliable splice detection and reject control of the defective sheet and only the defective sheet without any waste (which was an issue prior to this project). Upon completion of the installation, tests and run time, the customer was very pleased with the results and in time applied the same technologies to a Jagenberg sheeter located within the same finishing department.
